Future Outlook: Disaster Response
AIDMI> The Future Outlook> Disaster Response

Bihar floods relief and recovery
AIDMI had its first involvement in Bihar during the devastating 2007 floods. The impact of the floods in Bihar is extensive and in a state with comparatively weak governmental institutions, widespread poverty and a low level of education it makes the work difficult but nonetheless important. Its work in the state will continue, focusing on shelter and livelihood support for the poorest. The livelihood support will be more concrete, AIDMI will assist with techinical know-how and maintenance. A deeper penetration of microinsurance is on the agenda as well as a contiuntation of the campaign for safer schools. In a long-term perspective AIDMI will improve its work with excluded communities, which are spread out. Moreover, develop strategies for how one can work efficiently in a challenging state like Bihar, where one know to some extent where and when the disaster (flood) will arrive and who it will affect.

Kashmir earthquake recovery
In Kashmir, AIDMI will continue working with shelter and livelihood support to vulnerable and excluded groups. The conflict in Kashmir has been going on for decades and even though it is calmer now than ever, it is still ongoing and makes humanitarian work in the region challenging and potentially dangerous. Thus, it is essential for AIDMI to work on improving its response in conflict areas. This includes a continued cooperation and coordination with the Army and other local officials and stakeholders.

Tsunami recovery activities
On the grassroots level AIDMI will focus on four main areas; DRR, the campaign for safer schools, livelihood and shelter support and microcredit. The capacity building will continue in order to contribute to communities' resilience and preparedness for future disasters. For this, RRTI and CCISB will continue to play major roles. In the long-term, AIDMI will continue working for a further inclusion of DRR activities in the community sustainable recovery. AIDMI’s three local partners, Human Trust, CITU sand PPI will also be important stakeholders in AIDMI’s presence in Tamil Nadu.
